EMDR

Helen provides EMDR in clinic in Bath, as well as online.

For all of us, unprocessed memories are generally the basis of negative responses, attitudes and behaviours. Processed memories, on the other hand, are the basis of adaptive positive responses, attitudes and behaviours.

Francine Shapiro, creator of EMDR therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a powerful psychotherapeutic approach for processing trauma and alleviating distressing memories. Through guided eye movements, we help you reprocess traumatic experiences, enabling healing and fostering a renewed sense of safety and empowerment.

What it is?

EMDR is a phased, focused therapy that involves recalling traumatic memories while making eye movements. The goal is to change how the memory is stored in the brain.

What it’s used for:

EMDR is best known for treating trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it can also help with other mental health issues, such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Addictions
  • Behavioural difficulties
  • Relationship issues
  • Complex grief
  • Self Harm
  • Psychosis
  • Personality disorders
How it works

EMDR is based on the idea that traumatic memories can become “stuck” in the brain, leading to emotional and psychological difficulties.

How it’s done

During EMDR, you recall the traumatic incident in detail while making eye movements, usually by following the movement of your therapist’s finger.

Effectiveness

Dozens of clinical trials have shown that EMDR is effective and can help people faster than many other methods.
